The prevalence of kidney disease is frightening and our increased toxin exposure continues to compromise the proper functioning of this detoxifying organ. What’s worse, is that people often don’t recognize early symptoms related to kidney damage, and as a result more harm is inflicted on this precious organ until someone winds up in the hospital with kidney stones or dialysis.

The kidneys are best known for filtering toxins and waste out of your blood, helping balance your body’s fluids and electrolytes, and controlling the pH balance of your blood. However, there are many other things the kidneys do like controlling the bones of the entire body and development of bone marrow, influencing brain function, affecting the reproductive systems, as well impacting the ears, eyes, and feet.

So when the kidneys become compromised, any and all of these areas could be affected. But how do the kidneys become compromised in the first place?

One of the major sources of kidney problems is through heavy metals including cadmium, which primarily enters the environment through the burning of oil and coal and the incineration of municipal waste. Cadmium is also found in phosphate fertilizers which contaminates our food supply, as well as in healthy foods such as chocolate (even organic).

It’s important to note that smokers directly inhale cadmium into the lungs, and contain more than twice the amount of cadmium as non-smokers. Those that regularly drink alcohol or consume excessive amounts of protein will also see diminished function of their kidneys. Protein powder lovers, be wary of what you may do to your kidneys over time when consistently taking in large doses of processed proteins, and that goes for creatine supplements as well.

Finally, a bacterial infection can often make it’s way up into the kidneys through the urinary tract, from improper bathroom hygiene or even holding your urine for too long. This can compromise kidney function and damage them if left unattended.

If any of these things occur, you can expect many different symptoms to pop up, depending on your genetic profile and weaknesses. Those symptoms include:

– Lower back pain

– Rashes, itchiness, and dryness

– Acne

– Changes in urinary function, including foamy urine, dark coloured urine, and urinating more frequently

– Swelling and puffiness in various areas of the body

– Fatigue and weakness

– Rheumatic processes like arthritis

– Chronic ear problems

– Reduced eyesight acuity

– Weak bones

– Forgetfulness

– Kidney stones

So, what is a good start to fix your kidney problems?

Well, there are several ways to improve kidney function through diet and lifestyle. The key is to eliminate the pressures that caused the kidney dysfunction in the first place, and use food, herbs, and lifestyle habits that contribute to it’s health. Some great ways to start to improve kidney function include:

– Avoid smoke or any type of industrial pollution as much as possible

– Avoid coffee or caffeinated products, as well as alcohol

– Limit protein powders, especially those with dirty ingredients like conventional milk, non-organic rice, and genetically modified soybeans

– Eat plenty of hydrating foods, and consume clean and well mineralized water

– Take plenty of food based acids that will help get rid of infections and stones, such as cranberry juice and apple cider vinegar

– Consume plenty of heavy metal binders such as dark green algae and grasses

– Increase circulation through exercises or massage

– Sweat through infrared sauna or hot baths

– Use an herb like chanca piedra to help break up and pass kidney stones

Of course, a holistic approach always works best. Once kidney function becomes significantly compromised other areas of the body will become diseased, most notably the adrenals, muscle tissue and joints, and bones. Also consider that reduced adrenal function can also negatively impact the kidneys as well. A supportive approach in all these areas is the only legitimate way to heal the kidneys properly.
