Nutritional Supplement for Children – A Review

We try to do the best for our kids and we have the best intentions. We want them to get the proper nutrition so they can grow up big and strong. So what do we do? We trust a children’s nutritional supplement to deliver a magical array of nutrients in capsule form. Let’s review one of the most common brands to see what “nutrition” you are giving your child every day!

Flintstones Multivitamin Review

Flintstones, meet the Flintstones, a modern day over-rated candy…posed as a nutritional supplement. Let’s pick on this popular brand of children’s nutritional supplement, Flintstones, and their line that claims extra immunity support.

Here’s a look at the ingredients: Sucrose, Sodium Ascorbate (Vitamin C), Fructose, Ascorbic Acid, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Stearic Acid, Gelatin, Flavor(s) Artificial, Vitamin E Acetate, Sugar Invert, Niacinamide (Vitamin aB), Corn Starch, Red 40 Aluminum Lake, Yellow 6 Aluminum Lake, Blue 2 Aluminum Lake, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (HCL), Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Vitamin A Acetate, Folic Acid (Vitamin aB), Beta Carotene, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12.

Let’s break down the ingredients of this popular children’s supplement.

Sucrose, the first ingredient, is basically table sugar. Fructose is more of the same. Just to mix it up a bit a few ingredients later we have Sugar Invert, another clever name for sugar. Then we get to wrap up the sugar category with corn starch, which high fructose corn syrup is made from which is one of the most dangerous ingredients on the planet.  Not to mention it will be GMO, which is another issue on it’s own. So, sugar makes up almost 20% of the ingredients, and claims 2 of the top 3.  Not exactly what you want to see in your child’s ‘nutrition’.

Artificial Colours

Red 40 Aluminum Lake, Yellow 6 Aluminum Lake, and Blue 2 Aluminum Lake make up the middle of the pack. Those are not “natural” colors and note the word “aluminum” in each. Essentially you are consuming toxic ingredients for the sake of the cute colors that make your child want to eat them more. Too bad they actually cause more pain later than happiness now.  Here’s some evidence.

Isolated Vitamins

Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Vitamin E, Vitamin B1, B2, B12, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, and Beta Carotene are all listed. This is a very small list of essential vitamins, and contains no minerals which are also extremely important. You can guarantee that this is a highly synthetic form of these vitamins, and an inferior form at that. Your children’s body won’t know what to do with it, and best case scenario you are flushing the contents down the toilet.

I’m not exactly sure where the “immunity support” comes into play when sugar actually depresses the immune system, as well as artificial colors and other undigestible ingredients.  Perhaps the un-named Vitamin D is the key, or the Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C).  Oy.

My summary of the ingredients of this children’s nutritional supplement?

A whole lot of sugar and colors, fillers, and a few cheap vitamins delivered in a highly synthetic format that the body does not recognize which results in them being either held in the body as toxins or dispatched out of the body through elimination systems.

But the box is bright orange, and the pills are bright red, yellow, and blue! Bonus!

The problem with most major multi-vitamin brands

We tried to take pieces of nature, bind them together artificially, and make them as sugary and visually appealing as possible so children will take them and the company can turn as much of a profit as possible. These supplements are dirt cheap for a reason.  They have little quality, and the company knows that clever marketing will make you think you are getting the best bang for your buck.  In reality, all you are doing is hurting your children, even though you may think you are actually helping them.

What do you look for in a children’s nutritional supplement?

If you want to ensure your children get your daily dose of vitamin and minerals, choose a nutritional supplement that is whole food based that puts many powerful fruits and vegetables together in a way that your body recognizes so to ensure maximum absorption. This way you get the vitamins and minerals in a format put together by nature, which is always the healthiest option, and the most healing for the daily stresses they endure.
