In a “go-go-go” world, it is nearly impossible to give your body significant enough nourishment and rest to replenish your adrenals. People work hard all week, consuming far too much processed food and caffeine, and top off each day by staying up late and sacrificing their sleep. Weekends then roll in and people take it “easy” by going out for ill-prepared meals and taking in excess alcohol while staying up to the wee hours of the morning.
Adding insult to injury, we stress about our health, our finances, and our relationships 24-7, which taps our adrenals even further. This can escalate to anxiety and depression, which can take people to the point that they want to “tap out” of their life altogether. At this point, you are likely experiencing severe adrenal fatigue.
The good news is that you can heal your adrenals and get back your quality of life. Simply use these proven remedies and the winter season to get everything back on track so you can get your mood, energy, and body back to a more optimal state.
Signs of adrenal fatigue
Since adrenal fatigue is not commonly recognized by conventional doctors, and diagnostics are limited, it helps to understand the very common symptoms related to adrenal fatigue. If you find yourself saying “that’s me” to a few of the following signs, chances are you are experiencing adrenal failure:
- Tend to be a “night person”
- Difficulty falling asleep
- Slow starter in the morning (before coffee)
- Tend to be keyed up (trouble calming down)
- Headache after exercising
- Clench or grind teeth
- Feeling wired or jittery after drinking coffee
- Chronic low back pain
- Clench or grind teeth
- Become dizzy when standing up suddenly
- Crave salty and/or sugary foods
- Perspire easily
- Chronic fatigue
- Afternoon yawning
- Shin splints
- Tendency to need sunglasses
- Allergies or hives
- Low sex drive
- Difficulty relaxing
- Memory problems or feeling “spacey”
- Weight gain, especially in abdomen and waist area
- Early ageing
- Difficulty digesting foods
The more symptoms you resonate with in this list (or if some of them are quite severe) the more likely you are suffering from adrenal fatigue. If you don’t make any changes, you can count on more symptoms and the severity to increase.
But that’s not what you want to do, so here are some things you need to fix and adjustments you can make to begin healing your adrenals.
Natural remedies for adrenal fatigue
Healing your adrenals is best accomplished with a multi-faceted approach in order to support all the areas that affect adrenal function. Since normalizing adrenal function can take several months to years to replenish from an exhausted state, using as many remedies a possible is prudent so you can do it in as little time as possible.
Your first and most important task is to get into a proper sleep cycle. According to the CDC, one in three adults is not getting enough sleep and this disrupts the adrenals and their function as an internal clock which keeps physiological and metabolic rhythms in sync. If you continue to ignore this sleep debt your ability to make good choices during the day will then be compromised, leading you to poor food and beverage choices during the day which will further exacerbate your sleep debt.
To combat sleep deprivation, consider the following advice:
- Create a routine of “gearing down” at least 30 minutes before bed that promotes relaxation. This could include a calming tea, warm bath, essential oils, and a “dreamy” book. Avoid all electronics during this ritual.
- Take any food or supplements that can promote calm and increase melatonin production, like magnesium, passion flower, and fermented vegetables or beverages (1 to 2 ounces).
- Be in bed by no later than 11 pm and make sure to allocate at least 8 hours before you need to wake up. Adjust your bedtime accordingly.
- Make sure your bedroom is free of electronics, free of any disrupting odours (clean air is essential), and include white noise if possible (ie. fan blowing).
- Get a grounding sheet to offset any EMFs in your home that may disrupt your sleep patterns.
- Use the 4-7-8 breath technique by Dr. Weil that can help you fall asleep within 60 seconds.
Winter makes this routine much simpler as daylight hours become shorter and nights become longer, which makes it easier to get into the biological rhythm that promotes restful and adequate sleep. Combine that with a cozy home (a fireplace would be ideal), warm beverage, and a good book and you have some key elements that naturally promote better sleeping patterns.
Another vitally important habit for healing the adrenals is meditation. Once considered a habit for hippies, the mainstream has recently discovered its benefits to help alleviate the mental stress we endure on a day-to-day basis. Since much of this stress is forced onto us by our own mind, the act of meditation is a simple way to retrain our mind to think in a way the results in less internal and external conflicts. Our fight or flight reaction (fuelled by the adrenals) is then tempered and creates less wear and tear on our precious adrenals.
With regards to supplementation, an excellent choice to heal the adrenals is adaptogenic herbs. As their name implies, these herbs contain qualities that allow those who take them to better adapt to their personal circumstances. Once you are able to modify your response from “fight or flight” to a more healthy and grounding reaction, the pressure on your adrenals is relieved and allows for a quicker recovery. One of my favourite adaptogenic herbs is reishi, an exceptional medicinal mushroom that does great work on normalizing adrenal function. You can get a superior source, here.
Another import thing to keep in mind is that the adrenals thrive on adequate minerals, so be sure to nourish them with mineral rich foods like Himalayan sea salt, green leafy vegetables, and seaweed. If you want to make this simple and more effective, secure one of these potent mineral supplements.
Finally, what you eliminate from your life is as equally important as what you add to it. This means cutting the cord on ingrained and addictive habits that lead to adrenal fatigue and make it progressively worse. Some of the deal breakers you need to avoid to make inroads into healing your adrenals include:
- Coffee and caffeine containing products
- Processed foods (flours, sugars)
Regularly engaging in any one of these foods and beverages will undoubtedly stifle your progress, so take steps to remove them from your life so you can get your energy, mood, and life back!
To give yourself a kickstart to healing your adrenals, avoid the foods mentioned, rest for four days straight, and take the reishi and mineral supplements mentioned above.
